{"id":811,"date":"2008-11-05T14:23:40","date_gmt":"2008-11-05T13:23:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.tomfotherby.com\/blog\/?p=811"},"modified":"2009-03-15T15:27:38","modified_gmt":"2009-03-15T14:27:38","slug":"ubuntu-810-on-sony-vgn-ar51e","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tomfotherby.com\/blog\/index.php\/2008\/11\/ubuntu-810-on-sony-vgn-ar51e\/","title":{"rendered":"Ubuntu 8.10 on Sony VGN-AR51E"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>After installing Ubuntu 8.10 on my <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tomfotherby.com\/blog\/index.php\/2008\/01\/sony-vaio-laptop-15jan08\/\">Sony laptop (VGN-AR51E)<\/a> this is a list of some of the configurations I&#8217;ve made:<\/p>\n<h4>Fixes<\/h4>\n<ol>\n<li>The web-cam (MotionEye &#8211; Ricoh USB r5u870) doesn&#8217;t work, I think the driver isn&#8217;t in the kernel for Ubuntu 8.10.  In fact, \/dev\/video0 is completely missing (see <a href=\"https:\/\/bugs.launchpad.net\/ubuntu\/+source\/linux\/+bug\/255678\">bug 255678<\/a>). This is how to fix:<\/li>\n<ol>\n<li>lsusb gives: <code>05ca:1839 Ricoh Co., Ltd<\/code><\/li>\n<li>Download the latest driver: <code>svn co http:\/\/svn.mediati.org\/svn\/r5u870\/trunk r5u870<\/code> ( see <a href=\"http:\/\/wiki.mediati.org\/b\/2008\/01\/r5u870\/\">http:\/\/wiki.mediati.org\/b\/2008\/01\/r5u870\/<\/a> for more info)<\/li>\n<li>Do the following:\n<pre>\r\ncd r5u870\r\nsudo apt-get install build-essential subversion\r\nmake\r\nmake install\r\nReboot the machine\r\nsudo chmod 777 \/dev\/video0\r\n<\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<li>Test with <code>gstreamer-properties<\/code> or <code>xawtv<\/code> or <code>skype<\/code><\/li>\n<li>Cheese still doesn&#8217;t work but nevermind.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/ol>\n<h4>Configurations<\/h4>\n<ol>\n<li>To get DVD playback working: Install the Xine movie player: <code>sudo apt-get install xine-ui<\/code><\/li>\n<li>To get youtube working: Go to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\">www.youtube.com<\/a>, click to play a video and then click on the link to install Flash. Adobe provide a deb file that works fine &#8211; just make sure you don&#8217;t miss the Firefox &#8220;Allow this software to install&#8221; notification. Also, sometimes I have restart to see flash work (but other times it worked without a restart?)<\/li>\n<li>Install essential Firefox Add-ons:<\/li>\n<ol>\n<li>Install the British English Dictionary extension and restart Firefox. Once restarted, right- click inside a text field and choose English \/ British under the Language settings.<\/li>\n<li>Install <a href=\"http:\/\/addons.mozilla.org\/en-US\/firefox\/addon\/112\">LastTab<\/a> (I can&#8217;t understand why pressing Ctrl+Tab doesn&#8217;t default to your last tab in the base installation of Firefox?)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<li>Edit <code>\/etc\/hosts<\/code> and add the names of the other machines on our network<\/li>\n<li>Set up the printer:<\/li>\n<ol>\n<li>Turn the printer on.<\/li>\n<li>Click System->Administration->Printing. There should be 4 Devices, one being &#8220;HP Photosmart 3200 series 192.168.0.5&#8221;.<\/li>\n<li>Select &#8220;HP&#8221; in the &#8220;Select printer from database&#8221;, Then &#8220;Photosmart 3200&#8221;.<\/li>\n<li>The printer should now work.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<li>Remove the Windows recovery partition from the Grub Boot screen (because confusingly, it has the same name as the real Windows partition and I kept booting into the recover partition instead of the rubbish but game-playing-enabled OS I expected.<\/li>\n<ol>\n<li><code>sudo gedit \/boot\/grub\/menu.lst<\/code>. Then comment out the first occurrence of Windows which is at the end of the file.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<li>I like to press &#8220;super+d&#8221; to see my desktop (i.e. minimise all). To map this keyboard shortcut: System -> Preferences -> Keyboard Shortcuts. Under &#8220;Windows Management&#8221; section, click the &#8220;Hide all windows and focus desktop&#8221; and the press &#8220;Super+d&#8221;.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Still not working:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Three of the Sony Custom keyboard buttons: DVD eject button and 2 user programmable buttons. None of the methods described in <a href=\"https:\/\/wiki.ubuntu.com\/LaptopTestingTeam\/HotkeyResearch\">https:\/\/wiki.ubuntu.com\/LaptopTestingTeam\/HotkeyResearch<\/a> work.<\/li>\n<li>The Headphones socket.<\/li>\n<li>The card reader works for SD cards but not &#8220;Memory Stick Pro&#8221; cards (which is unsurprising since it is a Sony proprietary technology).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>After installing Ubuntu 8.10 on my Sony laptop (VGN-AR51E) this is a list of some of the configurations I&#8217;ve made: Fixes The web-cam (MotionEye &#8211; Ricoh USB r5u870) doesn&#8217;t work, I think the driver isn&#8217;t in the kernel for Ubuntu 8.10.
